About the Book

About the Book

Just 14 is a heartwarming, funny and deeply nostalgic coming-of-age novel that captures the joy, heartbreak and unforgettable moments of growing up in Britain during the late 1970s and early 1980s. At its centre is Jonathan, a football-mad teenager whose life is shaped by family, friendship, first love and an unexpected passion for Aston Villa, sparked by a small act of kindness from his grandfather.

Rich in humour, warmth and authentic Black Country character, Just 14 is far more than a football story. It is a celebration of childhood, community and the people who help define who we become. Through school adventures, terrace friendships, family struggles and teenage dreams, readers are transported back to a time before mobile phones and social media, when life was simpler but no less dramatic.

With memorable characters, laugh-out-loud moments and genuine emotional depth, Just 14 explores universal themes of belonging, loyalty, identity and loss. Whether you're a football fan or simply remember what it felt like to be young and full of hope, the story resonates long after the final page.

Loved by readers for its honesty, humour and heart, Just 14 is a nostalgic journey back to a Britain many will remember fondly — and a powerful reminder that the experiences of our teenage years often shape the rest of our lives.

About the Author

Andy Dale is the author of Just 14, the novel on which Generation Game is based. He has spent more than 30 years building a successful career as a Microsoft consultant, but his real ambition was always to become, in the words of The Beatles, a "Paperback Writer".

After finally publishing the novel he'd started writing as a teenager, he discovered that some dreams are worth the wait. His debut comedy Piranhas in the Bedroom launched a series of nostalgic, laugh-out-loud novels following the exploits of Jonathan Stadler, an Aston Villa-obsessed everyman.

Just 14 draws on his own experiences growing up in Birmingham and the Black Country — a world of terraces, tracksuits and unforgettable characters.

A trip down memory lane

"It's really as if a 14-year-old boy is writing this. The nostalgia is fantastic. And very funny. And of course, the outcome is well known. But it's a lovely ride. Buy it if you're a Villa fan — you will love it."
